Over 31,000 Evacuated as Heavy Rain Hits China’s Hainan Province

Beijing, September 14, 2026 : More than 31,000 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas in China’s southern Hainan Province as persistent heavy rainfall affected parts of the island.

According to Xinhua, a total of 31,564 people had been relocated from areas at risk, while no major disasters had been reported, citing the provincial committee for disaster prevention, mitigation, and relief.

Hainan raised its flood-control emergency response to Level II, while the city of Wanning activated a Level I emergency response, the highest level under China’s four-tier emergency response system.

Authorities also suspended classes in some areas and closed 27 tourist attractions after a tropical depression developed over the South China Sea, bringing heavy rainfall to parts of the province.

Relevant authorities are closely monitoring weather and rainfall conditions and taking measures to prevent flooding, urban waterlogging, geological disasters, and the inundation of roads and bridges.
